What do you get when you cross a legendary Finnish skateshop with the most
iconic high-top silhouette in skateboarding? Answer: A seismic homage to the
indirect architect (pun intended) of the art of pool skating. Introducing the
Beyond Store & Nike SB Dunk Hi inspired by the work of Alvar Aalto. The
collaboration pays homage to the legendary status of Aalto, and Jyväskylä, the
hometown of both Beyond and Aalto, which is renowned for its Aalto-designed
buildings.

The long wait for a high-top Dunk has been rewarded with a monumental
collaboration. The Beyond Dunk is a tribute to Alvar Aalto, an iconic modernist
architect who, unknowingly, became the pioneer of modern skateboarding,
with the creation of the first documented freeform pool in Villa Mairea,
Finland (1939). In this pool, curved lines replaced traditional straight edges.
From here, American architect Thomas Church visited Aalto’s Villa Mairea in
1943. Church, influenced by Aalto’s work, in turn turned freeform pools into a
Californian status symbol.

A drought in the mid-1970s led to the emptying of the iconic kidney-shaped
pools, revealing the rideable curves and lines to skateboarders, and modern
skateboarding as we know it was born. Thanks to Alvar Aalto’s organic
approach to form, skaters discovered an entirely new way to ride in the curves
revealed by the emptied pools, creating "lines that never end."

The Beyond Dunk embodies Scandinavian functionalism and Alvar Aalto’s
architectural finesse. The sneaker's birch-tone Swoosh nods to Aalto’s iconic
furniture, whilst the outsole highlights the rich red brick favoured in his
building designs. The high-top heel panel reflects the signature blue glazed
ceramic tiles seen across Aalto’s most famous sites.

Underfoot, Nike SB’s usual skate-ready tech is all there, including Air Zoom
Unit for impact protection, the foam midsole for a lightweight, responsive
cushioning, and the rubber outsole with classic pivot circle for the addition of
durable traction and heritage style.
