Skate Skills For Beginners #1: Master Pushing & Rolling Off A Ledge
2 min read Oct 2025 by Route One

In this beginner's guide to skate skills, we've got five quick lessons from some of our favourite skaters to get you rolling smoother and stopping cleaner.

How to Push a skateboard like a pro

Place your front foot over the bolts angled at 45 degrees. With square shoulders, push with short, even strokes from your back foot, then set it back on and coast. Remember to keep your eyes up with your weight centered over the board.

Dragging your foot to stop

Start by shifting your weight to your front foot. Then drop your back foot to the ground, heel down, toes up, and lightly drag. Add more pressure to slow faster, then lift to roll away again.

How to ride up transition to Fakie

To ride up transition to Fakie, approach a quarter pipe with your knees bent, a wide stance, shoulders square on your board, and with enough speed to get you halfway up the ramp. When you get to your peak, turn your head and pump in the direction you came - letting gravity do the rest of the work as you roll back in fakie.

How to Backside Kickturn for beginners

Start by approaching a small bank or ramp at an angle with your front foot over the bolts and rear foot on the tail. Approach compressed with your shoulders facing opposite to the way you want to turn. As you start to slow, uncompress and swing your shoulders the way you want to turn while lifting the front wheels slightly. Land centered and keep rolling.

Rolling off a ledge

Keep your speed steady and knees soft. As the nose reaches the edge, lighten it slightly, let the back wheels drop, absorb the landing, and ride away clean.
