Belgium to Brooklyn to Beyond!
Oct 2025 by Route One
Maité Steenhoudt is as entertaining and enigmatic as they come. Trading in field hockey for her first love skateboarding at a young age, she tore through Belgium’s under-16 scene alongside her best friend Donald; the two would battle for first place at every contest, only to stash away the prizes for competitions their crew held later in the year!
A serendipitous encounter with two elder Dutch skaters opened the door to adidas and Maité hasn’t looked back since! With a style reminiscent of Gonz at his 'Video Day's' best, she carved a path to pro status with Evan Smith’s much-missed Uma Landsleds, before dropping one of our favourite shoes in recent memory.
So when we heard she was coming to Manchester for the adidas BUILD event at Factory Studios, we wasted no time pestering the higher-ups for interview access. Chatting adidas, Element, Uma and more, Maité couldn't have been more endearing. So much so we gave her directions to a secret ditch spot in Maltby to hopefully film the ender in her new part - we guess we'll have to wait and see how that mission worked out!

From Aimu to Yuto, Japan just keeps producing insanely talented skateboarders, almost to the point where it feels disproportionate. Sure, the country has a population of 124 million (a little bigger than the UK), but the sheer volume of world-class talent coming out of the land of the rising sun is hard to ignore.

A quick Google search, and now we know about the heavy investment in infrastructure (read: skateparks) leading up to the 2020 Olympics, the cultural emphasis on practice, discipline & refinement, and the deep-rooted local scenes that have thrived for decades (who could forget the legendary Osaka Daggers!?).

Of course, none of that fully explains just how good Lakai’s Kyonosuke Yamashita is - but Thrasher clearly got the memo, having just dropped his part online. Safe to say the Nippon rep for skateboarding dominance isn’t slowing down any time soon!

Antonio Durao is a firm favourite here at Route One. A couple of years ago he went through a period of dropping a part every couple of weeks and, truth be told, we still see those days as a high water mark in human evolution!

But maybe our glasses are a tad rose tinted, as we're getting more amazing footage this week, barely a month after we covered his appearance in the Spitfire vid, and nobody could accuse the current geopolitical position as the zenith of our species' achievements!

Critiques of international affairs to one side, Durao footage always delivers and this collation of various iPhone clips, curated by bastions of quality skate entertainment Quartersnacks, is everything we've come to love about the floppy haired stuntman. Give it a watch now!
