Benny, the Birdman and Brunner
Sep 2025 by Route One
First it was Steve Douglas, the Abrooks and Sean Goff; then came Rowley, Penny and Carl Shipman. Nowadays, there's Casper Brooker, Harry Lintell and Barney Page. But back in the early 2000s, there weren't many British lads holding it down with the Californians, living the professional skateboard dream.
Bucking that trend, and paving the way for the likes of Ben Raemers and Ben Nordberg a few years later, was the New Forest's own Benny Fairfax, handling business on behalf of the UK stateside, repping Jason Lee and Chris Pastras' legendary Stereo brand, and ultimately making his way onto the full adidas squad.
And its's through adidas, and their fantastic BUILD event in Manchester, that we were able to catch up with Benny, asking him about those years in the Orange County sun, moving back to the UK, stepping up to team management and a whole lot more!

Talking of paving the way, they don’t come much more way-paver than the one and only Birdman, who’s the focus of Complex's latest episode of On Display.
In case you haven’t seen it before, On Display is a show about the collections that make us who we are. From lunchboxes to race cars - or, in this case, skateboard memorabilia - Complex dives deep into the psyche of collectors, uncovering the backstories behind their most beloved trinkets, and helping us learn a little more about the person behind the hoard.
Tony, it should come as no surprise, has amassed quite the stockpile of skateboarding relics over the years and talks us through everything from the shoes he wore to land the 900 to the board Robin Williams skated in the 1991 classic Hook. Our only complaint? At 14 minutes from start to finish, it could have gone on three times as long and we wouldn’t have gotten bored!

We’ll tell you something else we didn’t get bored with: Michael Brunner's part over on Free. My goodness, did this fella try!
It’s almost a trope these days for amazing clips to just be thrown up on Instagram, then “as sure as eggs is eggs” some pretentious commentator pops up and laments the throwaway nature of the modern industry 👀…
But to see a legit, years-in-the-making part, chock-full of creative and beautifully adroit skateboard navigation? Well, that’s a treat that warms the cockles of this pretentious commentator’s heart!
Clocking in at over seven minutes of pure joy (with the occasional angst-inducing slam spliced throughout), this is what skateboarding can be when somebody really puts in the effort - and we are 100% here for it!
