Sculptures, Speedway and Backyard Cement

May 2025 by Route One
If ever there was a thumbnail to pique one's interest it has to be this one from Andre Gerlich's new clip. I mean, what on earth is going one there? Even though we don't know much about the lad we were compelled to click play!

And ultimately that's key in the modern era. Obviously if Daewon drops a clip, Joslin comes out with something new or Suciu decides to top his 2021 SOTY run, we're going straight in. But if you're Andre Gerlich? Unless there are more people down with the Braunshweig, Lower Saxony scene that we're tentatively assuming, your name simply doesn't have that international recognition. Those first impressions count!

So it's a good job we were able to judge this proverbial book by its cover, as Emerica Europe ripper Andre goes off. Never one to tramline his spot selection, we reckon Arthur Derrien of Free Magazine puts it best: "Wavy roofs, an abstract car sculpture, trees, ropes, modern art… The list goes on; this part has every type of spot except conventional ones. Kudos to André for putting in the extra effort instead of going down the local to train up."

Now Cody Chapman does like a park, though we're not sure these amazing backyard contraptions constitute his "local," but it would be unfair to suggest he's taking it easy via his penchant for a designated skateboarding facility. We can't imagine Julien (Stranger, legendary SF ripper and Anti Hero head honcho) would take too kindly to that!

Nah, Converse's Santa Cruz connection Cody keeps it strictly hellride, whether it's 10ft of perfectly poured cement or a crusty hillbomb that would scare your average downhill mountainbiker. Check the brand new Thrasher if you feel his pedigree remains in doubt!

Mixing the terrain, cover star Cody is a modern day renaissance man who's not afraid of a speed wobble or two; we guess when your sessions are popping off with the likes of Grant and TNT you really have no excuse to not take it full throttle!

Sticking with that phrase, "full throttle" is not the kind of expression that necessarily springs to mind when you consider the life and legacy of the late, great Dylan Rieder. But it may have more resonance than first consideration suggests. Just hear us out...

As a man who defined a generation, his was a life lived unashamedly on his own terms. "Full throttle" seems almost unnecessarily gauche given the context but Dylan's flame burned fast and it burned bright; if we take it at its literal definition of something being done with great speed, energy and intensity, there are certainly less appropriate ways in which to describe the most important skateboarder of the 2010's.

And thus Kyle Beachy reflects upon an era where, under the auspices of Dylan, FA and the concept of 'Team Handsome,' skateboarding arguably came of age. In this 45 minute essay-cum-podcast for Farran Golding's Skate Bylines project, Kyle dissects the notion of style, skateboarding and how skateboarders come to know those who they spend so much time watching and admiring from a distance.
